5 Tips on Prayer

Originally Published July 18, 2015

I know I’ve been talking about prayer for two weeks now, but I feel like it’s something we all need to be better about. Below are five tips to enhance our prayer life today to become closer and closer to God.

Tip 1: Pray BIG Prayers

There is absolutely NOTHING that God can’t do, but I feel like there are times we limit Him because our minds can’t wrap around the enormity of His ability. It’s times like these I’ll hear myself praying, “God, if You could just…,” or “God, I know You’re busy but…,” when I should be praying, “God, I know You can…,” or “God, I know You’re never too busy for me.”

Could God just grant our unasked prayers? Absolutely! But I would venture to guess that He wants to see us trust and have faith that He can do all things. So today, ask that BIG prayer and have faith that God can make it happen if it’s His will.

Tip 2: Pray About Everything

Did you know God cares about all parts of your life? He even has every strand on your head numbered (Luke 12:7). So why do you only ask God what you think is worth His time? When you lose your car keys, do you pray and ask God to help you find them? When you need a bit more patience in your day, do you reach out and ask God for peace?

God wants you to be in communication with Him, to tell Him everything which leads us to the next tip…

Tip 3: Pray Continuously

How often do you talk to God? 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray without ceasing.” You may ask yourself how that’s possible, but I’m not talking about on your knees, hands folded, perfect prayer format. I’m talking about just having a conversation. Telling Him how your day is going and asking for His help through the mundane parts of life.

How often do you talk to your best friend? Do you think if you were to talk less that you’d lose a bit of the connection you have with them? That’s one of the reasons God wants you to pray and talk to Him constantly, He wants to be your number one, and when you make Him your number one, you’ll see amazing things start to happen!

Tip 4: Pray When Things Are Good

When things are good, it’s really easy to forget to pray. Deep down we know how thankful we are for the blessings in our lives, but we don’t always actually thank God for what He’s done for us. When things are good, we need to really be present in our prayer life because it helps us to be happier and more fulfilled.

Tip 5: Pray When Things Are Bad

It can be hard to pray during hard times because we may feel like God has given up on us, that He’s left our side, or maybe we just don’t know what to say. I hear it said a lot that God will never give us more than we can handle, but I believe sometimes He does give us more than we can handle because He doesn’t want us to rely upon ourselves, He wants us to rely on Him. God never leaves your side, He is always there to lean on and to talk to even when things are at their worst. And if you don’t have the words to say, just call out His name, cry, and know His arms are wrapped around you.
